I serve as professor and director of undergraduate music education at the University of Miami Frost School of Music (FL), where I teach courses in philosophy, cultural diversity, general music, and music in childhood. Previously, I served as an associate professor and coordinator of music education at Northwestern University (IL), a teaching assistant at The Ohio State University, and as a general and choral music educator in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
My research primarily focuses on sociocultural issues in music education, arts policy, and music perception. I co-edited and authored chapters in the books Teaching General Music: Approaches, Issues, and Viewpoints (Oxford U Press) and Musical Experience in Our Lives (Rowman & Littlefield) and have published extensively in journals and other books. My music arrangements and instructional materials are published by World Music Press and found in the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill textbook series, Spotlight on Music. I have presented workshops and lectures across North America, Asia, South America, and Europe.
I received a Ph.D. in music education at The Ohio State University, M.M. in performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and B.M. in music education at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. I am fully certified in Orff Schulwerk, have received extensive training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and completed the Management for Innovative University Leaders certification program at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.
On a personal note, I am an aficionado of modern architecture and have been known to take pilgrimages to experience architecture around the world, as well as delving into the architecture of the places where I live. Some of my favorite architectural experiences include Guggenheim Bilbao Spain (Gehry), Milwaukee Art Museum (Calatrava), Aqua Tower Chicago (Gang), Black Diamond Copenhagen (Lassen), and Falling Water Pennsylvania (Wright). I am also fascinated by creative design process (e.g., Ray and Charles Eames), film (e.g., Greenaway, von Trier, Van Sant, Lynch, Yimou) and modern art (e.g., Ólafur Elíasson, Julie Blackmon, Bill Viola), and enjoy playing tennis, biking, and reading fiction.
